Collector´s Choice

Sunday is Collector´s Choice Day. We do present one special piece of Mabini Art, chosen by private collectors of Art of the Philippines.

Crispin V. Lopez, Harvest Scene, 60 cm x 88,5 cm, Oil on Canvas, 1965, signed with date

For over 80 years now, Mabini Street, the two-kilometer street located in Ermita has been the nexus of touristy and artistic activities. In its heyday, it teemed with art galleries and shops, making it Manila’s most colorful alley.

Crispin V. Lopez (1903 – 1985) originated from Bulacan. He was strongly influenced by his father Emiliano with his José Rizal painting and his grandfather, a portraitist of families of the area.Crispin was independent of the Fernando Amorsolo school, his paintings can be distinguished because of their emphasis on tonal contrasts that approaches that of photography. In 1917, Crispin came to Manila, where he found a job retouching photographs in the portrait studio of Jose Nepomuceno. While thus employed, he finished his secondary education at FEU High. He started to devote himself entirely to painting in 1927.
