December 1996 – Celebration of 100 years Death Anniversary

Magkaisa Creative Space draws on its rich German-Filipino heritage of resilience, strength and dependability and is honored to provide insides of the relation between Germany and the Philippines during the time of the National Hero of the Philippines, Dr. José Rizal.


This time we take a closer look at the celebration of the100 years José Rizal Death Anniversary in 1996 in Heidelberg.

The celebration took place in presence of the German Philippine Community while presenting that time an Rizal exhibition of 20 artworks by Filipino Artist Roberto Lavides.


In 1997 those artworks were transferred by the than Honorary Consul inStuttgart in cooperation with the Embassy that time in Bonn and agreement with the artist to the Völkerkundemuseum in Heidelberg. In 2007 the Director asked the Gallery´s President and Rizalist Mr. Klaus W. Hartung to take over those 20 artworks into the surveillance of the Gallery. Until today those 20 artworks about Rizal´s Life and teachings are in the possession of the Gallery and sometimes used for exhibition about the National Hero of the Philippines.

The agreement with the Völkerkundemuseum and Mr. Klaus W. Hartung, now President of Magkaisa Creative Space and Gallery was signed in 2007 as enclosed.


Roberto Lavidez is an artist activist whose incessant interest in the life and works of Dr. Jose Rizal bespeaks in most of his artworks and writings. His Rizaliana series became the centrepiece of his personal projects namely “Requiem for Rizal”, “Birth of Freedom”, “Noli Me Tangere", “Centennial Art Tour”, and “Homage to Rizal”, all of which have successfully toured internationally in North America, Europe and Asia from 1996 to 2000.
