Art and Dr. José Rizal
Fountain once located at the village of Wilhelmsfeld in Germany located at the Luneta Park in Manila.
Magkaisa draws on its rich German-Filipino heritage of resilience, strength and dependability and is honored to provide insights of the relation between Germany and the Philippines during the time of the National Hero of the Philippines, Dr. José Rizal.
This time we take a closer look at the time, José Rizal stayed in Wilhelmsfeld near Heidelberg in Germany, exactly from April 26 to June 26 of the Year 1886, and finalized his Novel Noli me Tangere.
The fountain located in the garden of Pastor Ullmer was used to fetch water by the family and the guests.
Although they call it Rizal fountain, it was actually the drinking fountain in Ullmer’s rectory. Rizal wasn’t the only one drinking from it. Even birds drank and bathed on this stone drinking fountain.
In 1964 this fountain was donated by the citizens of the village of Wilhelmsfeld to the Philippines as a remembrance to the National Hero. The fountain was installed in Luneta Park.
After years in the Luneta Park, in 2011 the Rizal Fountain was in an unproper condition, therefore restored and repaired by the Department of Tourism and the National Park Committee, upgraded and repositioned. The new location of the fountain was finally unveiled by no less than late Noynoy Aquino during the celebration of the National Hero Jose Rizal's 150th birthday.
You may visit the Luneta Park and take a look at the location of the fountain yourself.
The collector of the artwork and the Rizaliana items has been in the heart of the German-Filipino cultural and art scene for a quarter of century, following the footsteps of the National Hero of the Philippines Dr. José Rizal and promoting Philippine art in Europe and in the Philippines.
