Rizal, Berlin and the Noli

Rizal's travel in Germany and his stay in Berlin

Magkaisa Mabini Art Collection and it's collector draws on its rich German-Filipino heritage of resilience, strength and dependability and is honored to provide insides of the relation between Germany and the Philippines during the time of the National Hero of the Philippines, Dr. José Rizal.

Today we give an inside about the book Noli me tangere and Germany.

José Rizal started his novel Noli me tangere towards the end of 1884 when he stayed in Madrid. He continued writing mainly when staying in Paris in 1985. He finished the last fourth of the novel in Germany. He wrote the last few chapters and adjusted the novel in Wilhelmsfeld in April to June 1886. It was in Berlin where Rizal stayed from November 01st, 1886 until May 11, 1887 where he finalized the Noli, made last revisions and finally finished same on February 21st, 1887. At the place where Rizal lived in the Jägerstrasse 71 in Berlin a marker is available.Rizal found a German Printer in Berlin, the Berliner Buchdruckerei Aktiengesellschaft, where the Noli was printed and finally on march 21st, 1887 came off the press. The translation of the german translated version was printed in 1987, 100 years after the original version was printed in Berlin in Germany.After the first edition of the Insel Verlag in Frankfurt was not available any more in the market, the second edition was provided in 2000 in Darmstadt, Germany through the efforts of Rizalist Klaus W. Hartung.

The edition is still available in the Philippines and Germany through the Social Media channels.
